Land Between the Lakes Recreation Area

If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to camp in a forest full of deer, wildflowers, and bison—while your dog tries to make friends with every woodland creature known to man—Land Between the Lakes is calling your name. Bear and I rolled into Hillman Ferry Campground not knowing what to expect, and let’s just say… it was wilder than we imagined (literally and figuratively).

Camping at Land Between the Lakes

If you’re planning to stay overnight in Land Between the Lakes, the Kentucky side has some of the most scenic campgrounds around. Hillman Ferry, Piney, Energy Lake, and Wranglers all offer different vibes, but Hillman Ferry is a favorite for LBL RV camping. It’s wooded, peaceful, and just a short walk to the lake. Whether you’re tent camping or hauling a rig, you’ll find sites with electric hookups, fire rings, and enough shade to keep things cool in the summer.

The day we arrived, the campsite was pretty much full. With only a few sites to choose from, we looked for something level and close to the restroom (since our tiny camper at the time did not have one). All the sites are paved and have a fire ring, picnic table, and plenty of space to pitch a screen tent or canopy.

The wooded area provided ample shade, even though we went in the heat of summer. We loved being close to water for kayaking. If there was one thing unenjoyable about the trip, it was the mosquitoes. Be sure to bring plenty of OFF and citronella candles.

“This guy was so huge. I was impressed by his majestic presence” – Teresa

“He was too big and scary. I didn’t even bark”- Bear

Wildlife Spotting at Land Between the Lakes

The wildlife at Land Between the Lakes is one of the biggest draws to the area. Visit the Elk & Bison Prairie for a drive-thru safari where the animals roam free. Pull up a log along the hiking path and wait for the chipmunks to find you. You never know what you’ll spot—from turkeys to turtles to those magnificent bison.

Natural Beauty Surrounds You

Spring and early summer bring bursts of color to the trails. If you’re a wildflower lover, pack your camera and take a slow stroll through the woods. There are plenty of hiking paths, but be aware of poison ivy, snakes, bees, and other hazards of nature.

Whether you’re into hiking, history, or just want to camp close to the lake, camping at Land Between the Lakes is a great vacation. We’re already planning our next trip back—once Bear forgets about the buffalo.
